Emergency Braking System Calibration

Emergency Braking, or automatic emergency braking, is a common advanced driver assistance system feature which acts quickly to detect hazards, and sometimes intervene automatically to avoid, or lessen the impact of, crashes.

Lancashire ADAS provides calibration services for all ADAS features, including emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane assist, and more, so you can rest assured that your systems are operating correctly and simplifying the driving experience as much as possible.

What is automatic emergency braking?

Automatic emergency braking is a feature of ADAS which uses sensors and cameras to detect imminent collisions with other cars, pedestrians, and/or obstacles. It normally comes in three stages:

  • Threat detection - radar, sensors, and cameras monitor the road ahead, detecting threats such as vehicles, pedestrians, animals, and more.

  • Collision warning - if a possible collision is detected, the vehicle will issue a visual or audible warning to alert the driver and give them time to react.

  • Automatic braking - if the threat is detected to be imminent, the automatic system will apply the breaks automatically in a way designed to slow the vehicle or bring it to a complete stop, based on what is deemed to be safer in the scenario.

  • The aim of automatic emergency braking, like all levels of ADAS, is to prevent accidents, or reduce the severity of accidents, keeping everybody safer on the roads.

Why is emergency braking system calibration important?

Emergency braking system calibration is extremely important because the sensors and cameras they use need to be highly attuned and angled in certain ways in order to operate correctly.

What calibration does is repositions or realigns these sensors and cameras, meaning that they detect threats as accurately as possible, in order to alert drivers and intervene appropriately.

Without a windscreen calibration, you might experience what’s known as ‘wrongful interventions,’ from your ADAS features such as emergency braking. Whilst rare, these interventions can lead to dangerous situations where crashing is actually more likely. ADAS calibration benefits are tenfold, as it fundamentally eases and simplifies the driving process.

What is involved in emergency braking system calibration?

Emergency braking system calibration involves the precise and exact realignment of the cameras and radar sensors used by the system. It can also involve wheel alignment checks

  1. Initial checks - we’ll verify the condition of your vehicle, checking for significant damage which we’ll need to account for during the process. We’ll also check for internal software updates.

  2. Wheel alignment - checking and adjusting the wheel alignment ensures your vehicle’s thrust line is correct.

  3. Static calibration - whilst stationary, we use diagnostic tools to align cameras and radar to certain targets which represent objects and lane markings.

  4. Dynamic calibration (if necessary) - a dynamic calibration achieves even more accuracy by doing tuning sensors and cameras whilst the vehicle is in motion.

  5. Final tests - once the calibration is complete, a series of tests and scans are performed to double check that ADAS is increasing safety.

  6. Note: It’s important to seek ADAS calibration after any accident, collision, modification, or bodywork.
