What is car tire alignment?

Tire alignment is the process of a mechanic adjusting the suspension and steering system of your vehicle, in order to make sure they are in the correct position. The mechanic will also make sure that the steering wheel is perfectly centered, to ensure correct handling of the vehicle following an alignment.

It is recommended that you seek wheel alignment at least once a year, or every time you notice signs of misalignment, or you’ve been in any kind of accident.

Signs of misalignment might include:

  • Uneven tire wear
  • A vibrating or stiff steering wheel
  • Your vehicle consistently pulling to either side
  • Noises such as tires squeaking whilst driving

Even decreased fuel efficiency can be a telling sign that you need a wheel alignment, as your car’s engine is having to work overtime to account for incorrect alignment.

Types of wheel alignment

There are two main types of wheel alignment that you should know about. These are called ‘4 wheel alignment’ and ‘2 wheel alignment'.

4 wheel alignment

4 wheel alignment involves adjusting both the front and rear wheels of a vehicle. During a 4 wheel alignment, your expert technician will correct the alignment for ‘camber, caster and toe’ angles. This will maintain or return perfect handling and safety to your vehicle. All 4 wheels must be perfectly aligned for a professional job, so that’s why you need to go with experts like Lancashire ADAS.

2 wheel alignment

2 wheel alignment is often also referred to as a ‘front-end alignment’, and only focuses on the front wheels, adjusting them to ensure proper alignment with the road. Similar to with 4 wheel alignment, each wheel will be adjusted for their camber, caster and toe alignments. Some vehicles only need the front 2 wheels aligning, so this process is usually faster and cheaper than 4 wheel alignment.

Wheel alignment FAQs

Why do I need wheel alignment?

You need wheel alignment because wheels which are misaligned, even slightly, can cause excess tyre wear, poor steering, higher fuel consumption, and uncomfortable driving. Misaligned wheels can actually make your vehicle shake/vibrate during driving. Regular wheel alignments are also important for safety, and will save you money in the long term because it’ll help you avoid serious damage to your car.

What is toe, camber and caster?

Camber

Camber refers to the angle of the wheels as viewed from the front of the vehicle. Negative camber means that the wheels are tilted inwards, whilst positive camber is when they’re tilted outwards.

Caster

Caster is the angle of the wheels when viewed from the side. Positive caster means that the steering axis is tilted towards the driver, whereas negative caster means the axis is tilted away from the driver, and towards the front of the vehicle. This affects both the steering and tracking of your vehicle.

Toe

Toe is the angle of the wheels as viewed from above the vehicle. Toe-in refers to toe angling where the front of the wheels are pointing towards the centre of the car. Alternatively, toe-out means the front of the wheels are pointing outwards.

How much does car alignment cost?

Depending on your vehicle, and the type of wheel alignment you require (2 or 4 wheel), an alignment is likely to cost you anywhere from £30 to £80. A 2 wheel alignment costs less than a 4 wheel, but any alignment can cost more if the car is poorly maintained and needs replacement parts.
